Bird Weekly – Photo Challenge

This week Lisa challenges us with “Birds with long wingspans” in her post here.

I was excited about this challenge because I snapped the photos below when visiting Panama City Beach, Florida and was waiting for an opportunity to post them. While visiting a park area, I looked up in time to take several photos of this Osprey as he flew overhead. Once I looked more closely I realized he was carrying a fish!

Now I had to crop these photos and they aren’t perfect, but as I was reminded by Tracy @reflectionsofanuntidymind in her recent blog post (found here) our photos don’t have to be perfect to still be awesome.

I wish I knew how big that fish was. According to Wikipedia, the Osprey wingspan can be up to 71 inches across!

At the bottom of this post you will see another photo layering experiment that came out rather cool. It combines the third photo below with a sunset photo from our hotel room in Panama City Beach.

Thank you Lisa for this fun challenge!

Happy New Year to one and all!
Welcome 2021!

They never have to be perfect! These are amazing! Anytime you can get an Osprey with a fish, it is a great day! Look at you getting all fancy with your backgrounds. That is pretty spectacular. If you hadn’t told us and I didn’t download it and zoom in, you would never know. I’m a graphic artist so I can usually see it, but most people wouldn’t with the naked eye. So glad you are experimenting and seem to be having fun with it. 🙂 Loving it!

    1. Thank you Lisa! Yes, I am really enjoying it, and trying to branch out my creativity 😊 …I have a tendency to go all crazy with the camera, then look later to see if I got anything awesome! 😁

I very often don’t look at my pics for days later after I’ve taken them. I almost always have to do post-production editing to them whether it is just a tweek of tone and contrast. I love doing black and white with a little bit of color. That may be an upcoming challenge this year. 🙂

      2. Make sure to give us some tips on that one! I experiment in Lightroom but have a lot to learn 😊

Oh, I will do that. My tips will come from photoshop. I don’t know anything else. I don’t know if Lightroom has the same features. I’ll set it up in a few weeks. I did just add a new one today for reflections. That will be a great one because I had a big birding day yesterday and captured incredible reflection shots. Can’t wait to show them off. 🙂

      4. Great! I have Lightroom and PS, a monthly combo deal, they both do completely different things. Of which I know about 1%!! 😁

Great! I will share this info when we get to that blog. I haven’t decided where I’m going to fit it in. I guess when I know I have some time to really write it up. It will help you apply it to stuff for Cee’s b&w photo challenge too. Many people use that technique including me. I just haven’t been able to do one of her challenges lately. 🙂

  7. Awesome! I am so impressed by your osprey shots, Lisa. Thanks for the shout out. I don’t think I have photos of birds with long wing spans.

    1. Thank you! We have hawks here, and I even got a few pics today when I was out. But not as good as these 😊 I think these were more luck than skill, but hey, you just never know what you might find when you look closely at a photo!

  9. Great flight shots, Lisa, and with a fish to boot!! The Osprey was “THE” bird that got me started in bird photography. 😍

    1. Thank you Donna! I will say, when I see a big bird fly over head, if I have a camera I look up and shoot! Apparently you just never know what you might get! This was pretty exciting to see!
Here maybe I can find a hawk with a rodent in his claws someday! 😁

Ospreys are very difficult to capture in motion Lisa, and getting one with a fish is even more special! Great get! And it looks great with the sunset as well. Wishing you many more great gets in 2021!

    Your photos are amazing!
I don’t think there’s such a thing as perfect! What’s perfect in my eyes, may not be in someone else’s. Everyone has their own talent, which is what makes us unique… but above all else, everything is perfect in God’s eyes. Well almost everything – you know what I mean!
hope you have a great day and thank you for all your comments!
