Our preserve has water!

Last year we discovered a nature preserve three miles from our home. It was and still is in the process of being constructed. In the past, areas of this new park would flood during rain and monsoon season, as it is adjacent to a river wash. The areas have been renovated and there is a lake area now being fed water and is very slowly filling. I was told this morning by a nearby resident that in the fall they will add a pipeline that will increase the water levels. However, at this time they are allowing the farmers to use most of the water. Hopefully our monsoon season will also assist in filling the lake.

According to the Parks and Recreation update, the preserve is in phase two of construction. “This phase will provide …decomposed granite paths following the existing dirt trail throughout the site, interpretive signs at key locations on slab mounted bases to minimize disturbance and a new northern pedestrian gate.” The “cultural resources site is currently receiving enhancements to improve the educational opportunities and recreation experience as a cultural resources park”. The site is 104 acres.

I am more than excited to watch the continued progress of this park. According to the update, the city Audubon has identified 244 individual bird species at this Natural Resources Park site. Parks and Rec will also be working with the local school district for this park site to be an outdoor classroom for their students.

This morning I headed out soon after sunrise to see more details of our new preserve. Below is a gallery including a few photos of the area. You can click on the photo for a larger view.

    1. Are you referring to the bird on the tree stump? That is actually water reflecting the sun in the background. But thank you! I thought it was a nice photo. Yes, with ALL of the building going on in our area it is amazing that they are bringing nature back, just down my road. I am so grateful!
