Love ’em or hate ’em, we need ’em!

With all the rain and all the plant growth, bugs have multiplied by the gazillions! They are everywhere, and we’ve got the bug bites to prove it!

But, we need our bugs. They are amazing and fascinating creatures. And although they can be creepy, for the most part they seem to leave us alone.

Purdue University’s page on Youth and Enterology shares a few interring bug facts:

  • More than 1.5 million species of insects have been named. This is three times the number of all other animals combined.
  • Without insects, our lives would be vastly different. Insects pollinate many of our fruits, flowers, and vegetables. We need them for pollination!
  • Many insects are predatory or parasitic and help keep pest populations (insects or weeds) at a tolerable level.
  • Without insects to help break down and dispose of wastes, dead animals and plants would accumulate in our environment and it would be messy indeed.
  • Insects are underappreciated for their role in the food web. They are the sole food source for many amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. In fact, it is difficult to find an insect that is not eaten in one form or another by people.
  • And insects make our world much more interesting. Naturalists derive a great deal of satisfaction in watching ants work, bees pollinate, or dragonflies patrol.
  • Can you imagine how dull life would become without having butterflies or lightning beetles to add interest to a landscape? People benefit in so many ways by sharing their world with insects.
  • Some bugs do cause problems, but the good from bugs outweigh the bad!

So here’s some bug appreciation!!

“I loved being outside. We’d hold lightning bugs in our fingers and pretend they were diamond rings.”
~ Loretta Lynn

“Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain.”
~ Henry David Thoreau
