Standing Tall: Great Blue Heron

As I wandered around our nearby lake yesterday morning, I was surprised to see this magnificent creature just standing at the edge of the water, calmly watching nearby activities. I took several photos, and stood ready to snap his takeoff once he became spooked. We have a nearby animal shelter and along with personal dogs, there are many volunteer dog walkers circling the lake as they enjoy their canine friends.

But no, he stood tall, proud and regal in his spot at the edge of the lake. Fearless.

What a beautiful bird, and so tall he stood! I looked up a few Great Blue Heron facts and he is, indeed, an amazing bird!

Did you know?

  • Despite their impressive size, Great Blue Herons weigh only 5 to 6 pounds thanks in part to their hollow bones—a feature all birds share.
  • Length: 38.2-53.9 in (97-137 cm)
  • Wingspan: 65.8-79.1 in (167-201 cm)
  • To hear their calls you can click on this link here
  • The oldest recorded Great Blue Heron was found in Texas when it was at least 24 years, 6 months old.

Stalking along from log to log, or plunging their long legs in the oozy swamp, two large herons paid no attention to my presence, but occupied themselves with their own fishing arrangements, as if their wilderness were their own.

[I have] a heavenly vase full of autumn leaves today. They look so beautiful. How much closer to God can one get? And a beautiful blue heron flew over the brook. Nature can make me cry faster than anything.

    1. We see them here, but oh my goodness, this one was just perfectly poised and not skittish at all! I would have loved to catch some fly away photos, but I wasn’t going to be the one to scare him off 😊 Thank you Sarah!

A perfect capture. You can even see the feathers. I don’t think it saw you.
