The coo of a dove is one of the most familiar bird sounds. We have all probably heard it at some point. The mourning dove, like every other species of dove, has its own unique coo sound. The low sound of the mourning dove’s coo was said to sound sad, so people said that it sounded like it was mourning. This name made sense because when someone dies, people can go through a time of sadness known as mourning.
The mourning dove is a part of the scientific family called Columbidae. This family includes around 300 species of doves and pigeons. (www.study.com)
I found this cutie on my walk around the lake last Saturday morning. I think he/she is a young dove, and so sweet perched on the tree branch.
A mourning dove’s beauty is an understated one: the colors of its feathers ranging through various shades of gray and drab violet, often with a striking splash of turquoise around the eyes.

True Lisa, doves are an understated bird. We have a large selection as many are fruit eaters in rainforests, seldom seen by most and some have beautiful colorings also. Your Mourning dove reminds me of our Peaceful Dove, which is heard frequently in forests.

I didn’t realize there were so many types of doves! We have so many that they are not too much loved around here. But I have taken many photos of them, they are beautiful. And they don’t bother me at all 😊

How adorable! I have a pair of Mourning Doves that visit my feeder droppings daily, I am soooooo hoping they have babies and bring them to my backyard. I watched them mate twice recently, gotta be real soon! 😉

With our windows open these days, I love waking up to the sound of the doves. I am glad you got some close ups. My babies just left the nest last week. Mama too. I miss them and suspect they are the ones in my backyard now as the recognize my voice. Not sure. Love the stage you gave them here.

😂🤣Oh my goodness, your coffee comment made me laugh! We’ve had many a dove nest in our yard, but never see babies. Might help if they would make wiser location choices. However, my parents had babies on their porch in a flowerpot!! They were SO cute! …and I also love hearing all bird noises in the mornings when I wake!

I am anxiously waiting for quail chucks to hatch from one of my flowerpots! I talk with the mama everyday so she knows I’m safe. Should be any day. 12 eggs!

OH! I love quail babies! I have never got a good photo of them. We often see them in our back yard. I think they live in one of our bushes out front. I need to keep trying! …please post photos! We did have one nest in our front flowerpot years ago. And would you know, they didn’t hang around long. I can’t remember, I may have seen the babies for a minute!
