One of my brother’s favorite things to do is explore the beaches. When visiting him recently in Ketchikan, Alaska, he took me out on his boat to do just that. I am blessed that my brother and I love to do many similar activities and we have a great time enjoying each other’s company.
Across the water from Ketchikan, located on the tip of Cleveland Peninsula, you will find Caamano Point, one of his favorite spots.
Camera in hand, my hiking shoes on, I jumped out of the boat into the shallow water, and off we headed to explore. I had hoped to find more birds. I did find one new bird and enjoyed discovering other beautiful sights as we wandered around the area.
Sadly, a container spill from a cargo ship has items washing up onto the beaches. As a retired marine biologist, my brother’s natural curiosity has him documenting the items he discovers. While we were there, we found luggage and plastic lids, and he found a boot. He also found some sort of container filled with what smelled like soy sauce as he emptied it. He picks up some of the stuff but is unable to take it all away. He’s found coolers and a variety of other plastics on previous beach visits.
Unfortunately, trash washes up everywhere around the world. I chose to focus on the beauty, fresh air and fun experience with my favorite brother.
…yes, I only have one brother 😊

You’ve been to Caamano Point? That’s amazing! It was a fun day. But I had to walk carefully. Lots of opportunities to twist an ankle or fall and break some important body part!

Ketchikan was one of the stops during our Alaskan cruise. I didn’t get to see Caamano Point but it looks like a great place to explore.

A beautiful beach walk! I love the views of the distant mountains 🙂 I’ve never heard of a Dowitcher – the pattern of the feathers looks lovely!

Thank you, Sarah! I looked up the little bird on iNaturalist. I saw very few new birds on my trip. Oh well, I thought this one was very pretty!
