I believe this to be a Northern Bobwhite quail, thanks to my iNaturalist expert who identified it for me. The Desert Museum has an aviary of rescued birds and he noted that my photo looked like a captive Northern “Masked” Bobwhite from the aviary. Indeed he was from the aviary!
Beautiful little creature, isn’t he? ❤️

He is beautiful. I remember hearing these birds in our area when I was a child. Sadly – I don’t hear them anymore

I had to look up the their sounds to see what they sounded like. You are the second one to mention hearing them. Very sweet bird calls!

Oh how beautiful, Lisa, look at all those colors and patterns! We have a small concentration of these bobwhites in Maryland and I’ve heard them but never been lucky to capture a photo. Some day I hope!

Thank you, Donna! He was in the aviary, so I assume he was rescued somehow. I loved his colors too, such a cutie!
