Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

After visiting North Cascades NP, Mt. Rainier NP and Olympic NP, on our 30th Anniversary road trip, our final park was Crater Lake.

We visited Crater Lake in mid-June, yet, sad to say, the road around the crater was closed due to snow! But the good news was that we had beautiful weather. They said they were opening part of the road the day we left!

Also worth noting, they predicted snow the night before we left!

Because I delayed reserving a room at the lodge, we ended up staying in a cabin about 15 minutes down the mountain. However, it worked out fine and it was very comfortable. And had there been snow, we may have avoided it due to our location. We don’t know if it snowed at the lodge, but there was no new snow at the cabins.

We stayed two nights. The afternoon we arrived was beautiful and sunny. We got late reservations at the lodge restaurant (8:00 pm was the earliest we could get). The food was fabulous!!! And the sunset was quite beautiful.

Day two we slept in, then spent the day walking as much as we could around the lake, shopping, and visiting the visitor’s center. We ate at the restaurant by the cabins, which was more casual, less expensive and also very good.

There was a hike we could have taken near the cabins, but we ended up going back up to the lake to see the sunset. The sunset was pretty, but not as pretty as the night before. And it was VERY cold!

Heading to the park the trees looked so very tall!

This was the only park sign we saw, so glad we stopped for photos!

So cute 🥰

Back side of the lodge:

It would have been lovely to have a room with a view of the water!

The entrance to the lodge:

The day we arrived the water wasn’t as calm as day two. The reflections were amazing!

Looking away from the lake:

Inside our cabin. There was no microwave or fridge, but they did have coffee in the room! No cell service, or TV either. Very peaceful!

Dining room:

This sitting area was VERY popular!

I noticed the sunset through the windows and ran out before dinner came to take a couple of photos with my cell phone. It was so beautiful!

One highpoint of the visit was the young bear that ran across the road in front of us when we were driving back down to the cabin! The only photo is in our memory 🐻🥰

A shame the snow prevented you from driving right round the lake but you seem to have had plenty of opportunities to absorb its beauty nevertheless. Your cabin looks pretty good. We did stay one night in the lodge years ago which was fantastic apart from the power cut which interrupted dinner service 😀 The sunset is wonderful as are the reflections in the lake!

    1. Thank you Sarah! I was SO sad I missed booking a room at the lodge. I even kept checking back for a cancelation. I even tried when we checked in at the cabins. But it was ok, I tried “just in case” 😊 Still had a fabulous visit! I guess we just need to “go with the flow” and enjoy what we can!

Hi, Lisa. I tried to leave a comment on the blog, but it is different than it used to be, so I’ll just tell you here how pretty those pictures are! I have seen Crater Lake, but it has been so many years ago, I just can’ remember! I was probably still a teenager… I think it was in June when we went, but there was snow there at that time, too. * *I especially liked the sunset ones, they were just gorgeous! * *Thanks for sending all the pictures, I sure do enjoy them. * *Love you
