Carpinteria State Beach is a bit south of Santa Barbara. While staying in Santa Barbara, we took one day to head out and see where the road took us. We discovered this park and spent a good amount of time here, walking the along the cliffs and wherever the path took us. There were a few clouds that helped keep us cool. It was a lovely park and worth the visit.

Along the way we learned that in 1928 the Cerca del Mar clubhouse and fishing pier was built. The exclusive club had great plans, along with a membership fee of $100 . However, when the Great Depression hit, the plans came to a halt. The clubhouse was used for a barracks in WW2, and then as the park headquarters. The clubhouse and pier were demolished in 1972.

Another interesting story is the fact that tar has seeped through the sand on the beach, and over the years has been used for many purposes. The Chumach people have used it to affix spear tips to shafts (among other uses). And in 1891-1912 the tar was mined, and six acres of the seacoast was tuned into an industrial site.

Absolutely beautiful!
Gorgeous!

Beautiful beach vistas Lisa. They mine Rutile (a form of titanium dioxide) in the sands of some of our beaches here. It is found in tiny flecks, a hard black substance used to insulate jet and rocket engines, due to its ability to withstand extreme heat and pressure. They make a mess of the beaches too, which are supposedly meant to be returned to original appearance.

Wow, I just never knew such things were found in the sand. Fortunately, this beach was quite beautiful!

I’ve not heard of tar seeping through the sand. I like reading about the areas you and Rich visit. And, always enjoy ocean photos.
